Can you tell us a bit about your background and how you got into photography?

I started photographing musicians and bands on stage, and live concerts - purely for my love of music. A photo pass meant a free ticket to the show :)

What inspired you to become a photography tutor?

Realising there was a giant gap between what people thought they knew and what they actually knew. It makes me happy to help people close that gap.

What are some essential skills or qualities that every photographer should possess?

People skills, humility, passion.

What would you consider one of your best pieces of work and why?

I have a few that I love, and it would be like choosing my favourite child but one that I always go back to is a waterfall image I created in Indonesia. The zen vibe that I still get from it is satisfying.

What is your teaching philosophy when it comes to photography?

Find the passion inside of you, approach things artistically and creatively.

What are some key skills and knowledge areas you personally focus on in your courses?

Embracing the aesthetic and emotion, but also having a solid foundation of the technical stuff.

Where do you draw inspiration from?

Music mainly! Also movies and film.

Are there any photographers you find most influential in your work?

Henri Cartier-Bresson for the candid nature of his work, Steve McCurry for his use of colour and portraiture, Ansel Adams for his tonal range.

What is your favourite part about being a tutor?

Helping students grow and learn, and find confidence in themselves to express their art.

What advice would you give to new students?

Be positive. Be willing to learn. Be open to feedback. Understand that there is always more to learn, no matter how far you travel.

Halfway through this course I took a gamble and applied a for a job at Satin Edge Photography. A small business in a small but expanding town which I live close, to learn more.

The lady who interviewed me recognised this course as she completed it herself and I got the job as an apprentice photographer!!!
